Plagiarism - Youtube

Plagiarism is a high-profile issue for schools; particularly issues relating to the internet. For some students negotiating plagiarism is like negotiating a mine field. Most cases of plagiarism are accidental, and could have been avoided if students become more aware of their own research practices.

We have a whole generation of students who have grown up with information that just seems to be hanging around in cyberspace and does not seem to have an author and some students believe this information is just there for anyone to use. The internet makes copying and pasting easy, of course. There are students from primary school to tertiary level who do not understand the concept of authorship, intellectual property, copyright and originality. Many students simply do not understand that using words they did not write is a serious offence.
 My thoughts are early education for students on cheating/plagiarism may lead to fewer problems in the future. Students or school libraries could have a blog to post comments or ask questions about the subject such as “can I copy this?” or what “common knowledge” is.
