Plagiarism is a high-profile issue for schools; particularly issues relating to the internet. For some students negotiating plagiarism is like negotiating a mine field. Most cases of plagiarism are accidental, and could have been avoided if students become more aware of their own research practices.

We have a whole generation of students who have grown up with information that just seems to be hanging around in cyberspace and does not seem to have an author and some students believe this information is just there for anyone to use. The internet makes copying and pasting easy, of course. There are students from primary school to tertiary level who do not understand the concept of authorship, intellectual property, copyright and originality. Many students simply do not understand that using words they did not write is a serious offence.
 My thoughts are early education for students on cheating/plagiarism may lead to fewer problems in the future. Students or school libraries could have a blog to post comments or ask questions about the subject such as “can I copy this?” or what “common knowledge” is.

Book Review

A friend lent this book to me and it turned out to be a very good/funny story. I don’t read many Australian novels or family sagas but I would recommend this one, a great read.This book was made into a mini series.

The time line is between 1943 - 1963 where the ne’er-do-well Pickles family inherits the dilapidated, unhappily haunted house at Number One Cloud Street in Perth. To make ends meet, they rent half of the house to the industrious, God-fearing Lambs, but sparks immediately fly. The families also have to contend with a sad and angry ghost, one of the “Stolen Generation” of Aboriginal children. With an odd blend of gritty detail and magical realism, Tim Winton writes with such compassion that you can’t help but love his characters as they squabble, love, and learn to get along over two decades of Australian history.

This Podcast may appear to be a bizarre choice, but when I think of music it does evoke emotion. How does music succeed in prompting emotions within us? And why are these emotions often so powerful? The simple answer is that no one knows.....yet. Music affects us all.It seems that the healing power of music, over body and spirit, is only just starting to be understood, even though music therapy is not new.

David Huron, professor of music, joined the School of Music faculty and the OSU Centre for Cognitive Science in 1998. Although he was trained in performance, Huron has an international reputation for his research in music perception and cognition. This research includes such areas as music and human emotion, and the perception of harmony, voice-leading, and melody. Since graduating in 1989 from the University of Nottingham (England) with a Ph.D. in musicology, Huron has published over 80 scholarly articles.

Professor Huron is currently teaching and researching the field of music cognition at the Ohio State University. He wants to know why people fall in love with music and understand why music is so enjoyable. What makes sound appealing (or unappealing)? Why do people have different musical tastes? How does culture shape our musical experience?

Delicious

Probably the most obvious reason to use Delicious is to organize the content you come across on a daily basis for future use. 

Delicious is an online bookmarking feature which makes it easy to access your bookmarks in places other than just your desktop or laptop. You are able to access your favourite web pages by simply logging into the Delicious site, you can even do this on your phone or PDA. You can also tag your bookmarks which makes it easier to find your favourite pages. I haven't used Delicious much over the last year but I discovered the tab to put on my toolbar, (I am eslow) I will use it more in the future.

Hodding Carter, W. 2006, Flushed: How the Plumber Saved Civilization, Atria Books, Toronto, Can.

I thought this was an unusual book title so I had to find out more information about it. Everything about the history of plumbing and toilets can be found in this book (plus some information that you probably don't want to know).
Not many of us want to be totally open about our bodily functions and their by products or go sewage spelunking through the sewer system under the Thames (Phew!).
William Hodding Carter certainly has much enthusiasm for plumbing, however odd, definitely would be worth reading.
Book Lovers Wiki is archival and has not been updated for several years.

What I think of wikis

Wikis that have a group of users can often provide access to information that may otherwise prove to be obscure and possibly difficult to find. Since wikis are easy to edit, they can provide access to rapidly changing information. I wonder if the collaborative nature of wikis could lead to problems, such as the inappropriate modification of information. Could Wiki security be an issue? Wiki leaks!

How can libraries use wikis?

A wiki could be used to develop an easily editable library website. They could be used to develop subject guides or to generate excitement for upcoming library events.

Did you know?

Wiki comes from the Hawaiian word for quick.

Almere Library is a new library with a unique and contemporary design.
Almere views its visitors more as customers than members, and takes its inspiration from a department store rather than a library. There are a series of stepped terraces with unusual contour lines. Winding bookshelves (5000 metres) follow the edges of the terraces and organize the interior into different zones for customers. Almere is definitely a departure from the traditional library.

RSS and newsreaders

What do I like about RSS and newsreaders?

I started using Google reader and RSS feeds last year – what a time saver!

Now I don’t have to visit websites and check them individually I just log into Google Reader. The best thing I think is that the content has had its presentation and formatting stripped away - no more useless annoying ads etc., which leaves only relevant and easy to understand content.

How do you think you might be able to use this technology in your personal life?

I am an avid orchid grower and house renovator. Having all the latest information and techniques on growing orchids and renovation all in one location is a great time saver. I also enjoy looking at historical books and manuscripts.

How can libraries use RSS or take advantage of this technology?

Libraries can take advantage of RSS by publishing new content automatically. They can also provide the latest updates on collections, such as fiction and maybe teach clients how to use readers and RSS. RSS is free marketing and easier to market than sending out email campaigns to clients.

My thoughts on fiction...

Why do we read fiction? Because we enjoy it! Fiction can be exciting, funny, sad, scary, frustrating particularly when an author changes characters at a crucial point in a story. We wait in suspense, what will happen? How will the story unfold? How will it end?

Steve Woods has written many articles this is his latest.The New York Public Library has developed an innovative way to bring a new generation into the library by encouraging them to use the Stereogranimator (image maker) which is the latest labs project.

This Cool Tool is designed to let users sift through the library's archive of historic stereographs and use them to create wiggle GIFs (Graphic Interchange Format - graphic image that moves) of their own. A good example of a library reinventing something old to attract a younger generation.

I think the NY Library's Cool Tool is very interesting and different. I hope everybody enjoys it. Click on the link below and have a look.
